Founders & Inventors
David G. Whitten, PhD
CEO & Scientific Advisor
A co-inventor of BIOSAFE Defenses’ technology, David G. Whitten has served on the faculties of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Rochester, Arizona State University, and is currently a distinguished professor at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and associate director of the UNM Center for Biomedical Engineering. He has worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory and was the co-founder and chief science officer of QTL Biosystems. David has earned numerous awards, including the National Science Foundation Pioneer Award. He is the editor-in-chief of Langmuir, a journal of the American Chemical Society; associate editor of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces; and authored more than 330 peer-reviewed scientific papers. He also holds several patents. David earned his AB, Masters and PhD from Johns Hopkins University and while a U.S. Army officer, he was assigned to NASA conducting research at the Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Kirk Schanze, PhD
A co-inventor of BIOSAFE Defenses’ technology, Dr. Schanze comes to us from the University of Florida, where his leadership and contributions that advance chemistry in both scientific research and education were widely acknowledged. He brings to UTSA and its College of Sciences national and international visibility. He has published 320 peer-reviewed papers and given close to 300 national and international lectures and seminars. He is Editor-in-Chief of a top-ranking international journal, the author and co-author of 11 books, eight book chapters, seven patents, and 12 patent disclosures – the marks of a distinguished track record of success that will continue to make a large national and international impact for years to come.
With such accomplishments and expertise, Dr. Schanze helps build the international recognition of the Chemistry Department, College of Sciences, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas.
Michael Waldmeier, PhD
Chief Technical Officer
Extensive experience with disinfectant test protocols as well as with navigating government regulations. B.S. in Chemistry, a DMD, and a MS and PhD in Biological Materials.
Many years of professional experience in research and development of oral care products, shavers and epilators for an international consumer products manu- facturer; conducting clinical studies and analyses; methods development and data acquisition for modeling and simulation advancements of product design; hygiene and quality requirements to comply with medical device regulations; Multiple academic education in the areas of chemistry, dentistry and biological materials.
Andy Pham, PMP, MBA
Andy Pham earned a BA in Economics at the University of California-Irvine and was selected by the government of Vietnam to be the first American host to the first business delegation to ever visit the United States from Hanoi, Vietnam, pre-1995 normalization. Andy founded and now manages Sunbelt Technologies Management, LLC, a closely held Las Vegas company whose principals have been involved in the venture capital industry for more than 25 years. Sunbelt has funded more than $200 million in such diversified areas as medical technologies, high technology, energy, real estate, pre-IPO and international investments.
